Origin Story of Sandwich
John Montagu became a governor at 10, served as a British naval officer, and loved art. He is hardly remembered for any of these. Today, he’s celebrated for putting slices of meat between two slices of bread. He’s known as the eponymous inventor of the sandwich. What an achievement! Given it’s Britain’s most significant contribution to the world’s cuisine.
He was the 4th Earl (equivalent to a governor) of a town in Kent called Sandwich (with a population of 4,985 as of 2011). He held so many political and military offices, but sadly, he was known to accomplish so little with them.
As a very conversant gambler, he had no time to have a meal during his long hours playing at the card table with friends. He would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread. His friends started ordering “the same as Sandwich”. And the world hasn’t stopped ordering a sandwich every day.
